Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on August 24 1972, in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise worked during the night shifts as a nursing assistant so she could pursue her love for theater and art during the day. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a young student. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight out college, as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
